  • How much can you afford to spend?
  • How should you invest money?
  • How much life insurance should you have?
  • Should you have long term care insurance and which one?

  • When should you and your spouse start taking social security?

  • Is your legacy as you want it, and is it organized so that probate and other aspects of estate settlement will not burden your loved ones?

Retirement planning is focused on addressing the many decisions one faces by following a systematic process. Examples of critical decisions include but are not limited to:

Are you concerned by how much your mutual funds are really costing you? Each investor directly pays shareholder fees such as sales charges (load) on purchases, purchase fees, deferred sales charges (load), redemption fees, exchange fees, and account fees. Operating expenses are typically paid out of fund assets meaning are paid by investors and include investment advisory fees, marketing and distribution expenses, custodial, transfer agency, legal, and accountant’s fees. Good luck figuring out how much you’re really paying. Now are you concerned?

  • Do you want cutting edge money investment management with more control over your taxes and with greater transparency than mutual funds?
  • Do you want to know that your portfolio managers money is invested right alongside yours?
  • Do you want to know the Real Risk Number™ of your investments and how that compares to your Real Risk Tolerance™?

If you answer “Yes” to these questions, then see 4 Alpha Investments and 4 Beta Investments for more information on the Forta Financial Group Investment Portfolios.

Tax minimization is becoming increasingly important and increasingly complicated. The rules retirees need to consider are multiplying as the government grabs for more cash. A few considerations include:

  • How should you generate income so that your Medicare adjusted gross income does not push you over tax thresholds?
  • When should you claim Social Security?
  • Should you do Roth conversions and when?
  • Which investments have lower tax burdens for income creation?
  • In what kinds of accounts should you own each of your investments?
  • How should you limit the tax take on your legacy?

My career in financial services was forged early in my life in San Diego after my mother became remarried to a man who was a financial planner when the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation was still very new in the 1970s. As an active proponent of the CFP movement, my new step-father went on to serve as President of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners (ICFP) (which later became the Financial Planning Association), President of the Board of Governors for the CFP Board of Standards, and Chairman of the International CFP Council. All of this influence inspired me to study business in college graduating with degrees in Finance and Economics.

My career in finance began shortly after college over 30 years ago, first as a financial advisor and soon after in a supervisory role. I joined Presidential in 1995 after being recruited by the founders to manage the firm’s San Diego Branch. In 2000 I filled the role of the firm’s Chief Compliance Officer and in 2018 was elevated to the position of CEO. With over 24 years with the firm I am proud to part of a team that strives to bring the best of the best to our clients, employees and financial advisors.

Dr. Nelson’s broad range of academic excellence and industry experience set him apart from most investment professionals. Few have like him started at a wirehouse, floor traded futures on the Chicago Board of Trade, earned a Ph.D. (economics from George Mason University), published in top economics journals, founded a company, designed software, performed due diligence on hundreds of money managers, simultaneously managed several dozen separately managed account strategies, and overseen over $2 billion in assets. These experiences along with an inherently critical yet creative mind allow him to provide a divergent and often useful perspective.
